Reflections for Para - Performance by Quinn Dukes, January 6, 6-9 pm

New York based artist, Quinn Dukes, will be performing, "Reflections for Para" between 6-9 pm, Friday, January 6.

This performance is devoted to activist, Obede Loyla Souza and the 1,150 other environmental activists who have been assassinated in their attempts to preserve the Amazon. Participants of the Lumen Festival were invited to light a candle in honor of those who have lost their lives over the past two decades.

Quinn Dukes frequently performs with Grace Exhibition Space in Brooklyn, NY and has received recognition by various publications including that of New York Arts Magazine and Flash Art. Dukes also writes for blogs: Art in New York City and Art in Brooklyn.

artist statement:

"As a non-hunter, artist Allyce Wood focuses not on the prospects of food or warmth-giving pelts, but the beauty and strangeness of each natural element when removed from the carcass. Subjects such as meat preparation, the skinning of kills, and the basic handling of the dead are recreated by watercolor painted paper sculptures, cut paper tangles, and prints. Tangles of blood vessels stand alone like tumbleweeds, gold weavings hang like drying fruit: emblems of the richness of life left to shrivel. The material selected reflects upon the fragility of life: the temporality of construction is a reminder of the tenuous existence of those being depicted. The artificial remains are displayed upon black woodworks: tripods such as those over camping fires or meat-drying racks further explaining the consciousness of the humans involved in the original actions."

Ben Shepherd, founder of HATER and best known as the bassist and co-writer for the mega rock band, Soundgarden, will include perform his recent solo work as well as exhibit his personal musings conveyed through a visual installation.

Ryan Crase, a Seattle- based visual artist, designer, musician, and creative node, will be collaborating with Ben Shepherd and Vanessa Fiola on prose-based, projected installations. Most recently, he is involved in new and experimental works in music, modern dance, theater and multimedia performance with On the Boards.

Vanessa Fiola is a Los Angeles- based performance artist and writer. She co-founded a national street art project and co-authors an online advice column. Her work has been featured in NY, LA, SF, Seattle and Austin. She will install a wall-sized textual piece and read from her work the night of the opening.

Spencer Moody, is in the bands, Murder City Devils, Triumph of Lethargy, and Mongrel Blood. He is also the proprietor of Seattle's The Anne Bonny, a published poet and visual artist, who will exhibit a series of paintings and a sculpture. Spencer will be reading poetry on opening night.

Scarlett Lam lives and works in New York City. She is an artist-in-the round, involved with visual art art, theater, and music. Her writing credits include WILD RICE, which premiered off-broadway at the ONE festival and the short film, Metronome, which is currently making the rounds in the indie film circuit. As an actor, Scarlett has appeared in Grey’s Anatomy, How I met your Mother, and Law & Order, among others.

The OK Hotel is proud to exhibit Randy Wood's sculptures through the month of February.

Since 2001 Wood has been a steward of the Seattle artist-run gallery, SOIL. In December of 2008 he exhibited his recent sculpture with the group at the Aqua Art Fair in Miami Beach. His cartoons and illustrations have appeared in The Stranger and Tablet. An administrator at Cornish College of the Arts, he also teaches classes on creating comics at Pratt Fine Art Center and Gage Academy.

This Thursday, January 7th, The OK Hotel will open Higher Ed, a group exhibition featuring admissions representatives of some of the nation’s leading colleges of art and design. These administrators are artists, instructors, curators and critics in their own right, adept at fusing the ideological principles of higher arts education with a markedly distinct visual vocabulary. Represented institutions include: Cornish College of the Arts, Seattle, Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland, School of Visual Arts, New York City, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, among others.

The artists will be in Seattle for the opening of the exhibition on the occasion of National Portfolio Day (an NPDA-sponsored college fair specific to Bachelor of Fine Arts programs in the U.S. and Canada). Portfolio Day, hosted by Cornish College of the Arts, will be on Saturday, January 9 from 11-3pm.

Jeran Avery paints abstraction in the most representational forms. His interest is in a realm where fine art fuses with popular culture: Comic books, graphic novels, tattoos, hot-rods. The drawings on exhibit relate to the familiar visual sequences found in comic books or comic-based media by abstracting the intense essence of the comic book, eliminating the story, characters and colors.

His goal is to question the nature of representation itself. At what point do the most familiar things become abstracted? Can you hold the tension between subtle abstraction and complete departure from the naming subject?
